The Stuff of Nightmares

This painting is in remembrance to the September 21st tornadoes that destroyed parts of the city. Many people, including some of my friends, are unable to return to their damaged houses.

This is a location where I frequently enjoy walking my dog and the amount of damage done to the forest is shocking and disturbing. The emotional toll of all the destroyed homes, seeing the trees stripped bare, and the skyline absent of it’s lush forest is traumatizing.
I’ve noticed the way different lighting affects the scene and how certain times of day adds a haunting beauty to the destroyed forest. It helps to evoke a sort of calm and ominous sense to the piece and shows that there can be beauty in disaster. The pyramidal composition of this piece creates a contrast between the harmony and unity of the triangle, to the devastating ruin of the forest.
The title of this piece is a quotation in the news from a tornado victim which I thought was appropriate. It also adds to the haunting quality of the painting.
