“Vulnerable” by Catherine Burns is a symbolic representation of vulnerability of the mind and body, created using graphite and charcoal on paper. In this piece the nude figure, portraying aspects of self, fully exposed and defenseless, seeks solace in a fetal position. This is one of the most familiar and comforting positions to humans, relating to both gestation and protection. It can be an instinctual reaction to extreme stress, when the mind is no longer able to cope with a hostile surrounding environment. The reflexive adoption of this position, along with the depiction of the figures youthfulness, through parts of the anatomy, illustrates its fragility. This crouching pose also reveals a conflicting muscular tension straining to break free from internal and external pressures. The subject, isolated in a dark and open space both physically and mentally, seeks refuge. The exposed wing symbolizes vulnerability and covers the head, as a means of protection like a mother bird protects its young.  There is an awkward hopelessness where the fully grown body no longer fits under its mother's wing, yet she hides her eyes from the world as a child in the hope to be invisible. While she longs for security under the wing, the wing also promises freedom to escape the enveloping darkness.

The nudity and fetal posture featured in this piece are intended to reveal that many people are afraid to expose themselves to the outside world amidst the pervasive scrutiny of modern social media and the risks of cyber harassment. It provides the audience with validation and some solace that they are not alone. Adopting a false air of strength and confidence is often used as a method of showing mental and emotional strength, yet it is important to understand that vulnerability is a universal emotion felt by all.  While people may attempt to hide their vulnerabilities, it is essential to recognize and accept our weaknesses to be truly resilient and fully liberate ourselves.
